Dr. Shamsul bin Mohd Nor is a Malaysian Islamic educator, Qur’anic teacher and institutional founder whose work joins tahfiz schooling, adult literacy in the Qur’an and public da‘wah. He is based in Rawang, Selangor. His academic formation runs from a medrese education in Istanbul to doctoral study in Malaysia. He completed Islamic studies at Ismail Aga Camii Medresesi in Fatih, Istanbul (1992–1995), a Bachelor’s degree in Shariah Islamiah at the University of Al-Aqidah, Jakarta (2006–2009), a Master in Al-Quran and Al-Sunnah at the Faculty of Islamic Studies, National University of Malaysia (UKM) (2010–2014), and a Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Usuluddin and Philosophy at the same faculty (2015–2019).
His longest institutional responsibility is with Yayasan ITMAM, where he serves as Chairman and Principal. Under that foundation he leads training, counselling, research and rehabilitation programmes for the Muslim community and oversees a cluster of educational centres. He is founder and principal of Maahad Tahfiz Al-Muhammadiyah (MTAM), a tahfiz school that has produced huffaz of the Qur’an and has sent students on to Al-Azhar University. He also directs PUSDA’I (Pusat Pengajian dan Dakwah Islamiyah) as a resource centre for knowledge, tazkiyat al-nafs, sanad-based instruction and spiritual formation, and supports Arabic-language preparation for tahfiz students through the Aleem Centre in Cairo, a language centre recognised by Egypt’s Ministry of Higher Education. He has acted as field supervisor for master’s and doctoral candidates.
In 2000 he developed the Al-Badar Method, a concentrated course designed to teach reading of the Qur’an in twenty-four hours of instruction. The method has been used in kindergartens, schools, adult classes, PERKIM and KAFA settings. As founder and chairman of Al Badar Academy he has extended that approach through community centres that combine Qur’an reading, teaching from the Qur’an, da‘wah and syariah guidance. He has served as module advisor to Rumah Ngaji Malaysia under Yayasan Ummah Ikhlas, as a strategic partner of Galeri Ilmu Sdn Bhd in the development of Qur’an and tajwid materials, and as a consultant to Yayasan Restu on public hadith programmes. He is a member of Nashrul Al-Quran of Yayasan Restu.
His public teaching reaches a national audience. He is researcher, host and Qur’an commentator on TV Al-Hijrah’s programme Quran 114, with several hundred episodes produced, and a weekly panelist on IKIM Radio’s Friday Tadabbur broadcast. He has been associated with the European Halal Congress as a participating speaker and researcher. He has trained authorised religious teachers through the Irsyad Fatwa Council of Negeri Sembilan and instructors in the Army Religious Corps (Kor Agama Angkatan Tentera, KAGAT), and has advised on syariah compliance, including takaful-related matters, for Al-Mahabbah Association.
Alongside educational leadership he has worked as a trainer in Islamic human development. As Managing Director of Pearl Mentor (M) Sdn Bhd he has designed and delivered modules in tawhidic management, Islamic team building, supervisory skills and interpersonal skills. Over two decades those programmes have been run for organisations including Celcom, Kampung Baru Medical Centre, Keretapi Tanah Melayu, Lembaga Zakat Selangor, PETRONAS, Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia and FELDA. Earlier commercial roles included marketing and content work in Islamic travel, umrah and hajj briefing, and one of Malaysia’s early Islamic education portals.
Dr. Shamsul also serves as shareholder and Islamic coordinator of Anatolia Travel Network, leading professional groups on Islamic heritage itineraries and acting as tour leader for umrah and hajj. The Honorary Professorship of Practice in Islamic Education and Qur’anic Pedagogy, conferred jointly by the International Association for Quality Assurance in Pre-Tertiary and Higher Education (QAHE) and the American University of Business and Social Sciences (AUBSS), records this combination of institutional founding, Qur’anic pedagogy and public teaching. The title is honorary. It does not replace Malaysian statutory recognition.
